Hey! So if the name of the site wasn't a dead giveaway, I'm Nick. I like movies and I like writing. So, I figured why not combine the two into something others can enjoy?

These posts are simply my opinions, and nothing more. Obviously not everyone's going to agree with what I have to say, but I'm not here to convince anyone, "Movie A is objectively a much better movie than Movie B, and you're foolish to think otherwise." I won't rate movies on here nor will any list that I may put together necessarily try to rank one over the other. I'll discuss movies in terms of how much I personally enjoyed them, and not so much give a recommendation based on whether or not the movie was put together well.

And by "put together well," I mean this: Film is certainly an art form, and it's also a visual medium. And because it's visual-based, part of what makes a movie work well is that there's plenty of solid material for the audience to look at. We don't want to see 90 minutes of just a bunch of people standing around, talking, and not doing anything or discussing anything interesting. But when I was in film school, I heard a lot of people take the visual part of film and focus on it a little too much. We would watch a lot of art-house films and I would hear a lot of people say, "I love that film." When they'd discuss why, it was usually because the movie in question had a bunch of scenes that were shot well. It was lit better than most movies, the scenery was really gorgeous to look at, and the actors were positioned in certain ways that it was almost symbolic. If you took a snapshot of some scenes, they're truly stunning to view. While it seems that's enough to give a recommendation, you then get to the rest of the movie, and you find that the story moves at a snail's pace, the characters do very little, and the dialogue doesn't feel organic. So why bother wasting your time sitting through it just because a few scenes look really pretty?

Long story short, a movie should be visually appealing, but you also need other elements that make you want to come back to it. I'll certainly be discussing what drew me or turned me away from certain movies, but what works for me may not work for everyone else. I may like something with a mediocre plot, but the acting was so strong I could get past the so-so story, but someone else may watch it and the story may be so much of a problem for them that they hate it. Some movies do things better than others but like with anything else, it doesn't mean that everyone's going to enjoy them equally.

Everyone's different. And that's okay. I just hope you enjoy these posts.
