91st Academy Awards: Winners

Green Book ended up coming home with the top prize at last night's Oscars. Despite some controversy leading up to the big night - mainly the reactions from the family of the film's subject Don Shirley, saying it was an inaccurate portrayal of the famed pianist - the film ended up emerging victorious, defeating the projected winner, Roma, which dominated the awards circuit and was nominated for ten Oscars (Green Book was nominated for five).

Both Roma and Green Book each won three awards, along with Marvel's mega-hit Black Panther (which was nominated for seven awards). The film that wound up with the most wins was surprisingly Bohemian Rhapsody. Despite its own share of controversy (mostly revolving around director Bryan Singer), Rhapsody was a favorite during awards season, resonating with audiences much more than it did with critics, as it was one of the least favorably received movies of all the nominees.

Despite lukewarm critical reception, Rhapsody won four out of the five awards it was nominated for, including Best Actor for Rami Malek, which was seen as the main reason the film worked well at all. Outside of Rhapsody, Panther, Roma, and Green Book, no other film won more than one award last night.

The ceremony wound up being one of the shortest Oscars in recent memory, clocking in under four hours, and moving at an extremely quick pace. This was mainly due to the fact that the ceremony lacked a host, which meant there was no one to cutaway to in between awards. Instead, the ceremony bounced around from presenter to presenter, with many well-received pairings including the fan-favorite opener of Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, and Amy Poehler, as well as Melissa McCarthy and Brian Tyree Henry in exaggerated costumes when presenting Best Costume Design.

The Oscars consists of 24 awards. Out of my predictions, 16 were correct, while 3 of the winners were my second choices. I totally missed the mark on 5, with the two biggest misses being Best Picture and Best Actress. See the predictions against the actual winners below:
